Perspectives from Our Faculty

Q: What do you enjoy most about teaching?

A: I enjoy getting to know each student as an individual and guiding them through their musical growth. It is always rewarding to witness moments of progress—when bow control improves, vibrato becomes more natural, or a student delivers their most confident performance to date. These milestones reflect not only technical development, but also growing musical maturity.

Q: What is your view on masterclasses?

A: Masterclasses are an essential part of a student’s musical education. They provide valuable opportunities to perform, receive insights from experienced concert artists, and learn from observing others. These experiences broaden musical perspectives and help students develop confidence, awareness, and inspiration beyond regular lessons.

Q: What are your thoughts on learning music in Singapore, and should students participate in competitions and performances?

Q: Performing is an important part of musical growth and cannot be fully replaced by practice alone. Through studio recitals, festivals, and selected competitions, students gain real performance experience and learn to manage pressure on stage. Competitions are not about winning every prize, but about developing confidence, performance skills, and musical freedom. Each student’s path is carefully discussed and planned according to their readiness and goals.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF TEACHING?

I love getting to know the students well. My students are just the most amazing young people. I also love seeing the musical improvement. When the weight shifting in the bow hand finally works, or vibrato comes alive, or something gives his best performance so far, I am always very excited!

WHAT IS YOUR VIEW ON MASTER CLASSES?

I want to give my students every possible opportunity while they are in Academy. We have been very fortunate to host such incredible concert artists! Masterclasses offer a unique opportunity to both perform and learn, and to have that magical touch of a concert violinist! The observing audience learns so much also, so everyone benefits.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS TO LEARNING MUSIC IN SINGAPORE AND DO THEY NEED ATTEND COMPETITIONS, PERFORMANCES?

I believe that students can’t really “practice” performing so we need to actually perform as much as possible! We have multiple studio recitals or festivals throughout the year. Many of my students will discuss with me which competitions would be best for them. I encourage them to get out into the world and perform and compete! Winning everything is not the goal– instead, building performance skills, confidence, and freedom on stage.
